Self-Love

Katie Gillespie

Maybe it would be worth it to fall in love
Not with another, that I’m not sure
But maybe with yourself

Maybe then it could be enough
To stop the aching of my heart, maybe it’s the cure
To the buzzing of my skin or the racing of my thoughts

Maybe then I could live up to it all
If I started small, insignificant as I’ve been
Before trying to be bigger than myself

Maybe it could be worth it
Maybe I could be worthy, then
Worthy of something more

You’d have to ask Narcissus
If the pool-gazing was worth
The flowers they named after him

Katie Gillespie is a third-year English Language Arts major with a minor in theatre. She is studying to become a high school teacher, and she plans to eventually continue her degree and teach at the college level. This is her first time publishing her work, but she hopes to further her creative writing endeavors and eventually publish a full poetry and short story collection. "Self-Love" was inspired by her issues with self-worth through connection with others, and partly inspired by her interest in Greek mythology.
