Sanguis Ignis

Danny Duncan

We didn’t start the fire, but

healing water’s useless against

fires of blood: the fuel, like oil,

eternally being poured on.

Blood is thicker than water and

the thickness of pain shows this best.

There’s no better accelerant,

than blood boiling over reason.

Better off without them, but so

much fewer around with them gone.

Before my love turned into hate,

every bonfire shared was bliss.

Marshmallows roast over the logs

of my family tree, both sweet

and smoky. I watched it fall down,

and don’t care to recall the love.

Blood is thicker than water, but

family and blood aren’t the same.

I can’t help my pained laughter-

Better to burn than fade away.
